Mastering Wash Day | A Step-by-Step Guide for Short 4C Natural Hair

Dumelang Di Chomi

Welcome to the ultimate guide for conquering wash day with short 4C natural hair! If you're tired of unrealistic expectations and want a practical routine that works, you're in the right place. Today I will be breaking down each step, from pre-poo to scalp care, leaving you with manageable, healthy hair.

Added bonus, there is a whole video showing you how to master wash day for short 4C natural hair.

Step 1: Pre-Poo Power

Before diving into shampoo, it's crucial to prep your hair with a pre-poo treatment. This step involves applying Aunt Jackie's Transform Leave In Conditioner followed by Dabur Amla Hair Oil  to your dry hair, allowing it to penetrate and soften for an hour under a shower cap or what I love using, a plastic shopping bag (work with what you have), before washing. Pre-pooing not only adds moisture but also minimizes tangles, making the washing process smoother and less damaging.

Step 2: Suds and Cleanse

Once your hair is prepped, it's time to cleanse with a gentle shampoo. I use the Organics shampoo, one tip that I can say is; use a shampoo that works for your hair as expensive doesn't always mean better. Focus on massaging the shampoo into your scalp to remove buildup and dirt while being gentle on your delicate strands.

Step 3: Revitalize with Hair Mayonnaise

After shampooing, I prefer to treat my hair with a hair mayonnaise. Packed with protein and nourishing ingredients, this deep conditioner helps strengthen and moisturize your hair, restoring vitality and elasticity. Leave it on for the recommended time to allow your hair to soak up all the goodness.

Step 4: Condition for Softness

Rinse out the hair mayonnaise and follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. The conditioner I used was Naobay sulfate free protective conditioner (honestly not my favourite conditioner but I don't believe in wasting in this economy). This step is essential for replenishing moisture and sealing the hair cuticle, leaving your locks soft, smooth, and more manageable. Don't skimp on this step—your hair will thank you for it!

Step 5: Seal and Protect

After rinsing out the conditioner, apply a hair serum or oil to lock in moisture and add shine. My go-to serum has to be the John Frieda Frizz Ease serum and also works as a heat protectant. Focus on the ends of your hair, where moisture tends to escape, to prevent dryness and breakage. Choose a lightweight formula that won't weigh your hair down.

Step 6: Gentle Blowout

If you prefer stretched hair, opt for a gentle blowout using cool air, what a life changer as this was the first time blowing my hair out on cool air. This helps to elongate your curls without causing heat damage. Remember to use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying to shield your hair from potential harm.

Step 7: Nourish Your Scalp

Show your scalp some love by applying tea tree oil to soothe irritation and promote a healthy environment for hair growth. Use a scalp massager to distribute the oil evenly and stimulate circulation, encouraging optimal hair health from the roots.

Step 8: Trim and Tidy

Finally, give your hair a little TLC by trimming any dry or split ends. Regular trims help to maintain the shape of your hairstyle and prevent damage from traveling up the hair shaft. Invest in a good pair of hair shears and snip away any unruly ends for a polished look.

By following this realistic and comprehensive routine, you'll keep your hair happy, healthy, and thriving. Remember, consistency is key, so make this routine a regular part of your hair care regimen for the best results. Happy washing!
